It is normal to feel nervous
If you are dreading your first day at the gym, you are in good company, and it passes fast. Nobody expects a beginner to know what everything does, and everyone on the floor started exactly where you are now.
A well-run gym makes the first day easy on purpose. The goal is simply to show up, get comfortable, and come back.
What to expect
A good first day looks like this: a quick tour, someone showing you a few basic machines and how to use them, and a short, gentle full-body session. That is plenty.
Focus entirely on learning the movements rather than lifting heavy. Form first, weight later, is the fastest way to progress without picking up niggles.
What to wear and carry
Wear comfortable, breathable workout clothes and proper training shoes, nothing you would not want to sweat in. That is the whole dress code.
For your bag, you need very little: a water bottle, a small towel, and a change of clothes if you are heading somewhere after. Keep it simple.
How to make day one easy
Go in with a simple plan or, better, a coach to guide you, so you are not standing in the middle of the floor wondering what to do. Ask questions freely; that is what the team is there for.
And do not overdo it. A short first session you enjoy beats a punishing one that leaves you too sore to come back.
